100,000 marine mammals die from plastic waste
This, of course, does not go without consequences for marine life. Animals such as seals, dolphins, and birds mistake plastic fragments for food and eat them. The animals either starve to death despite full stomachs or die of intestinal obstruction. According to current estimates, including those by the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), around 100,000 marine mammals and one million seabirds fall victim to this madness every year.
